Nutrition and Wellness
When enrolled in one of our programs, clients will receive nutrition and wellness education. Here they will learn why exercise and proper nutrition are critical for the sustainment of both physical and mental health.
Addiction it is defined as a chronic brain disease that is extremely vulnerable to relapse. For many, one of the ways that addiction cravings can be managed is through healthy eating. Moreover, food is the fuel our bodies and minds need to uphold our overall wellness, and what we eat and drink can impact our desire to use drugs and alcohol and adversely affect pre-existing mental health conditions.
For instance, someone who is struggling with depression or anxiety might view food, along with drugs or alcohol, as a method of coping. In treatment, therapists can work with that person to help him or her examine behaviors related to food and also teach ways to implement good nutrition into a healthy lifestyle.
We also encourage the following as components of a well-maintained, proper diet:
- Scheduling a regular time for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
- Providing healthy snacks throughout campus
- Using individual therapy as a forum to address eating habits
- Informing clients of the benefits of eating properly
Nutritional wellness can be examined further in individual and group therapy sessions, where a client can delve into his or her relationship with food in addition to the neglect of his or her well-being as a means to help reform negative behaviors.
Wellness encompasses many different facets of one’s overall being. Critically, being “well” requires one to eat properly, exercise, have healthy social interactions, and engage in activities that are enjoyable. This might seem simple, but many people who are newly sober can struggle with cultivating a way of life that fosters wellness.
As noted, our center focuses on a healthy diet but also concentrates on helping clients heal from the inside out. We do this by showing clients how to incorporate exercise, mindfulness, education, and counseling into their personal treatment program.
Many people in recovery find exercise extremely beneficial to their physical and mental wellness because activity prompts the body to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that sends reward signals to the brain. This rewarding feelings, in turn, causes an individual to feel happier and more satisfied.
Mindfulness is another wellness practice that allows individuals to observe and remain in the present moment. Oftentimes, those in recovery find themselves wrapped up in their thoughts and feelings. However, applying mindfulness techniques to everyday life allows the person to stay in the present and relax their mind in ways that reduce stress and promote peace.
Other wellness components to one’s recovery in participating in group activities, spending time outdoors, and getting enough rest.
